"Reflections on Tri Delta Membership"

by Erika Garlitz Kirst (Puget Sound, 1992), President, San Diego Alumnae Chapter
(excerpt was read at Founders Day 2003)

"As the new Alumnae Chapter President, I want to share with you why I am still involved with Tri Delta. For me, it's because Tri Delta is relevant.

Tri Delta was a huge part of my college experience. I met many inspiring women, and learned a great deal about both leadership and friendship. I believe that these ideals added value to my college degree. After graduation, my ties to Tri Delta were largely social... my sisters and I navigated being fully on our own for the first time. The fact that we were able to do this together made it adventurous. I believe the bonds of friendship kept us sane.

I recently moved to San Diego, and knew only two people before I arrived. They both happened to be Tri Delts, so I joined the local alumnae chapter. I wanted to feel connected to my new environment. I wanted to be part of an organization that is bigger than myself and worthy of my energy. Each of us has many demands on our time, and many good causes worthy of our attention. This time, I made a conscious choice in looking toward Tri Delta. Inarguably, our philanthropy is worthwhile... just recall the local children's cancer researcher who spoke at last spring's Pansy Brunch. I also wanted to be involved with a group that I could learn from and grow with. I must say that the women I continue to meet through my membership in Tri Delta are fascinating and inspiring. And I am so grateful to be a contributing member of this amazing group of women in San Diego!

Regardless of my stage in life, Tri Delta has been enriching and relevant. For that reason, I choose to stay involved. At this Founder's Day, I believe that Sarah Ida Shaw's ideals and vision are as relevant to me as they were to the original initiates 115 years ago."
